Tips for a Perfect Craft Day

I love to do crafts with my kids and we try to fit them in every day!

But planning a successful craft day with kids takes a bit of preparation (unless you want to spend more time cleaning than having fun). Having a plan in mind – or written down – helps to relieve any stress and keeps the day running smoothly.

Here are my 3 tips that work every time:

Keep It Simple

The key is to choose a few simple projects that are age-appropriate and engaging.

Sometimes I see a project that I really like but if it has a long list of supplies or would take longer than my kids can stay focused, then it’s a big ‘no’ to me. I always go for simplicity. Overcomplicating things doesn’t even work for older kids unless they have a lot of patience.

I’d rather do a few easy projects that don’t take much time than a more complicated one that my kids might get bored with along the way.

‘Keep it simple’ is the way to go.

Prepare Ahead of Time

I usually talk to the kids about what we’ll be working on to get them excited and to make sure I’m on the right track with the activities. Most of the time, if I am excited, they are too!

I try to gather all the necessary supplies in advance to avoid interruptions once we begin our project. Taking a break in the middle can often ruin the flow of the activity, so the more you can prepare ahead of time, the better!

I also set up a craft space with surfaces that are easy to clean. Sometimes I use disposable table covers or mats to make tidying up quick and easy once we’re done with our projects.

Encourage Creativity

While working, I always encourage each child to put their own spin on the project, whether it’s choosing different colors or adding unique decorations. I love seeing their unique input and creative side.

When we’re done, I make sure I have set up a small area to display their crafts, giving each child a chance to show off their hard work. It not only makes the day more memorable but also reinforces their enthusiasm for future projects. I want them to feel proud of their creations! And I love looking at their work, too. It reminds me of all the wonderful time we get to spend together.

But most of all… have fun!

It’s okay if it the project or activity doesn’t go exactly as planned. As long as everyone had a good time, it’s definitely a success!
